The Health Care Sector is the main task for North Denmark Region. Over 90% of the budget is located in this area.
All regions in Denmark are in charge of the main aspects of the Health Care Sector, which includes:
  • Hospitals
  • Psychiatry
  • Primary Sector

Hospitals

The hospitals in Northern Denmark represent practically all medical specialities, and offer most types of treatments. In particular, Aalborg University Hospital is of great importance to the high standard the regional hospitals possess.

  • 3 hospitals on 11 sites
  • 1,753 beds plus an additional 50 beds in the patient hotel
  • Approx. 8,700 employees working in the hospitals
  • A budget of almost 7,2 B DKK
  • Pre-hospital force with approx. 50 ambulance alert units 

Psychiatry

The psychiatry in North Denmark Region offers various treatments for citizens with severe mental disorders, who need a more specialised treatment. The Psychiatry in North Denmark consists of two Psychiatric Hospitals, three local departments and The District Psychiatry.

Primary Sector

The Primary Sector ensures free health care from general practitioners as well as specialists. Subsidies are also provided for medicine and for treatments by dentists, physiotherapists, chiropodists, chiropractors and psychologists. 


Furthermore, the region is obliged to make health care agreements with the municipalities in the following fields:

  • Discharge pathways of treatment for ailing senior patients
  • Admission pathways for treatment
  • Rehabilitation
  • Assistive devices
  • Prevention and promotion of health - including patient focused prevention
  • The effort towards citizens with mental disorders
